Art Smarts: Henri Matisse & Collages

Aimed at the homeschooling community in the Abilene area, Art Smarts is a great program designed for tweens and teens with an interest in the arts at your Main Library. For this month, we’ll be studying the artistic styles of Henri Matisse, a French visual artist known for his use of color and his body of work in the medium of cut paper collage. After learning about the artist, we’ll supply all the materials for you to get hands-on with making your own collages in his style. At each morning meetup we’ll supply the materials for you to come in and create something fun to add to your home decor. Plus, it’s a great way to meetup with other avid crafters too. For this session, we’ll supply all the materials need to show you how to make your own Easter Egg Wreath. Come out and be surprised at what you can do with your hands in this series.

Aimed at the homeschooling community in the Abilene area, Art Smarts is growing and now being offered a second time at another location and featuring a different art project to get hands-on with. If you have a tween or teen with an interest in the arts, join us for the next session at your Mockingbird Branch as this session will feature learning about self portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo. Come out to learn about this artist and then get hands-on with making your own flower adorned self portrait, with all materials supplied.

Terrific Tots: Monster Puppets

If you’re attending Toddler Time at your Main Library at 11:00AM, stick around afterwards for Terrific Tots. This is a program that will offer seasonal fun activities for young kids to engage in, and at this session, we’ll have your kids getting ready for this spookier time of year. Come out as we supply all the materials to have your child create their own cute monster puppets. A great program designed for kids up to age four so come be a part of the fun. Storytime room on the first floor.

Art Smarts: Polka Dot Pumpkins

Aimed at the homeschooling community in the Abilene area, Art Smarts is a great program designed for tweens and teens with an interest in the arts at your Main Library. For this month, we’ll be talking about Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and the hallucinations she had that inspired her particular form of art covering everything in polka dots. Afterwards, we’ll get hands-on with our own art project by making our own version of the artist's famed pumpkin using polka dots. All supplies will be provided, so come out and get artsy with your library.

Celebrate The Cat in the Hat's Birthday!

You are invited to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the beloved children’s title, “The Cat in The Hat” on March 12. As part of this celebration, Dr. Seuss Enterprises is reaching out to organizations that manage beloved landmarks to see if they can get as many statues as possible wearing the iconic red and white striped hat.

But that’s not all. Oh no. That is not all!

In addition to decorating the Storybook Capital of America’s sculptures in downtown in red and white, the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) will offer a free Dr. Seuss inspired art activity from 10 am to 1 pm March 12.

Home School Art Day

All home school students and parents are invited to attend The Grace's monthly art classes. Topics range from fine art techniques, to art history, to culture and traditions. Classes are available for K-12 aged students.


COST: Members of Big Country Home Educators (BCHE): FREE
All other students: $3 (per student)

*Parents are required to stay throughout the class.
