DISCOVER THE ART OF NATURAL DYEING

Join us in Abilene, Texas, for an immersive Indigo Workshop where you'll uncover the fascinating world of natural dyes. This workshop is perfect for artists, crafters, and anyone interested in sustainable and traditional dyeing techniques.

TWO CLASSES: 9-11 am OR 1-3 pm

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Participants will:
* Learn the history of natural dyes used by the artist, such as indigo and cochineal, and other materials integral to his work.
* Understand the significant effort involved in dyeing with organic pigments, particularly cochineal, pericon (Tagetes lucida), and indigo.
* Gain hands-on experience in the dyeing process, creating your own uniquely dyed wool scarf to take home.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
* Introduction: Meet the artist and get an overview of the workshop.
* History of Zapotec Weaving**: Discover the rich heritage and traditions of Zapotec weaving.
* Natural Dyes: Learn about the various dyes used by the artist in his creations.
* Indigo Dyeing Process**: Engage in a detailed, hands-on indigo dyeing session, experiencing each step of the process.

WORKSHOP DETAILS
* Hands-On Experience: Participants will actively engage in the dyeing process using wool shawls, which they will keep.
* Limited Spots: To ensure a personalized experience, the workshop is limited to 15 participants.
* Materials Provided: All necessary materials will be supplied.

Getting Creative with Resin

Join us at the Center for Contemporary Arts as artist April Rifenburgh teaches her process of using resin to create mixed media assemblages, inspired by her new exhibit Explorations in Movement!

 

All materials will be included for this workshop, but participants are encouraged to bring their own collage materials (scrapbooking paper, glitter, buttons, colored cellophane, confetti, crayon shavings, etc) from home if they wish! Pieces will take 24 hours to dry, so participants have the option to leave finished works at the Center and may pick them up the following day.

 

Tickets: $45 for General Admission; $40 for CCA Members for a 2-hour workshop with Artist April Rifenburgh!

Teacher Workshop: The Art of Reading

Our most popular workshop each summer! Come again and enjoy NEW materials and projects that blend language and visual art in fun ways for early learners!

Workshop provides a year’s worth of monthly enrichment lessons that connect classic and popular children’s literature with visual art and cultural artifacts from the museum collection. Each lesson provides strategies to develop or enhance visual thinking, verbal and listening skills for ages 5-7. Coordinating classroom activities/crafts are additionally designed to encourage creativity and fine motor-skill development.

Very hands-on workshop; leave with curriculum packets, digital images for classroom use, finished activity samples and freebies!
