The Malpass Brothers concert

The Malpass Brothers concert

It was a transformative moment when two young brothers discovered their grandfather Malpass’ LPs collection. Drawn like a moth to a flame, the classic-filled treasure trove from the golden era of traditional country music gathered little dust in the Malpass household. Chris and Taylor studied the brother-harmony bluegrass duos of Jim & Jesse, the Louvin and Wilburn Brothers and bathed in the sounds of Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Charlie Pride, Merle Haggard. It was musical Manna to the boys—there was nothing in the marketplace that fed The Malpass Brothers’ soul more than the music of this bygone era--and they would stay true to it.

Best known as modern-day troubadours who carry the torch for traditional country music, The Malpass Brothers began singing and playing together professionally at a very young age. Alongside their dad, Chris Malpass Sr., the siblings performed at churches all over the southeast, but they continued to hone their traditional sound by working alongside and amongst the legends.

The Malpass Brothers are anything but a “throwback” cover group. Instead, they are the “real deal.” Mentored and credentialed by the biggest legends of bluegrass and country music, the brother duo continues to deliver new, yet traditional music in modern times (complete with pearl-snap shirts, Manuel/Nudie suits, over-shaped cowboy hats, and pompadour coiffure, just to drive home the point). Their firm “traditionalism” has captured the attention of the industry and traditional country fans, leading to their worldwide notoriety.

Crystal Gayle in Concert

Crystal Gayle in Concert

Country music songbird Crystal Gayle is best known for her long floor-length hair and smooth voice. The most popular song of her career is without a doubt the classic hit “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” Crystal Gayle’s real name is Brenda Gail Webb. There was already a singer named Brenda Lee and Decca Records didn’t want to have confusion with two Brendas. After seeing a sign for Krystal hamburgers, her famous sister Loretta Lynn suggested the name Crystal. If you’ve paid attention to the lyrics of Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” you know that Crystal Gayle and her numerous siblings grew up impoverished in the Appalachian Mountains. Crystal was the only child to be born in a hospital. Her parents eventually moved the family to Indiana to live in a retired miner’s colony.

“Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” was originally written for another recording artist.

Composer Richard Leigh originally intended to have Dame Shirley Bassey record the song. Crystal convinced him to let her sing it and it’s certainly one of the best bargains she’s ever made.

JOHN CONLEE IN CONCERT

John Conlee is a lot like the songs of which he sings. He lives a domestic life with his wife Gale and three children, Rebecca, Jessica and Johnny. During the past two decades, John Conlee has achieved a level of success that he has sustained by simply being himself and by making records that the listening public can relate to. He is a gifted entertainer, but he’s not into the glitz and hype of the entertainment world. He’d rather spend his “off the road” time working on his 32-acre farm outside of Nashville or engaging in his woodworking and gunsmithing hobbies.

Gene Watson in Concert

JMT Entertainment presents GENE WATSON

Fri - Jul 30, 2021 - 7:30pm

This masterful country stylist from Houston, Texas has been thrilling audiences for more than 50 years. Gene’s very first radio single, the self-penned “If It’s That Easy” was released in 1962. Although the song didn’t make any radio charts, it did start the career of the man now known as “The Singer’s Singer.” Gene Watson’s tally of 75 charted titles, 23 top-10 hits and 6 number-one records has led to membership in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. Radio listeners are still transfixed whenever classics like “Farewell Party,” “Fourteen Carat Mind” or “Love in the Hot Afternoon” are played. The depth of emotion in his singing, his brilliant phrasing, his jaw-dropping range and the power in the lyrics he chooses are all factors in the awe he inspires in both fans and his musical peers.

At an age when most people are contemplating retirement, Gene Watson is still making some of the greatest records of his life, receiving such accolades as Album of the Year and even Album of the Decade from journalists around the world. Watson earned the title of 2010 Country Music Legend of the Year, from Citadel Media’s Real Country Radio Network nationwide fan vote.
